Make sure your oil is on the dot, and don't lug the engine.  And the best advice on this page was Peters  "Don't go far from home"

yeah i just put a spare fire extinguisher of ours into the bug. was going to put fresh gas in tank but looked in the tank and the it looks gunky so how would i clean that out? no rust just gunk guess from sitting so many years. half tempted drain tank take it to  grumpys car wash and spray it out first.

but the fenders are on, wiring be done tommorow. wish i have time to weld but that will happen in due time.. also need get seat belts in the backseat...

/cheers

Pull the tank out.  Remove the filter behind the bug nut at the spigot.  Replace spigot w/o filter.  Plug the fuel line spiccot.  Place 1/2 gallon of fresh gasoline in tank along with a 12-18" length of chain.  Cap the tank and move that chain around so that the chain is moved all around.  Continue this operation, checking the progress until the "gunk" is gone.  Drain and rinse with another small amount of fuel.  Re-install filer behind the big nut at the spigot.  Install new inline filter and replace after first tank of fuel is replaced.

I was staring at mine earlier today as a matter of fact, and they are the 10mm head (shorty bolts) aka 8mm.

the things you find in a gas tank

dozen dead bee's
yellow gas cap
the copper in tank filter gunked with 1/4  inch of black sludge

but the chain and gas worked. new filter on. headlamp buckets put together.
making great progress..
also cleaned the dirty break fluid tank.. so tommorow that goes on and bleed the breaks

Loosen up all the fittings on the master cylinder first and let the fluid seep out (gravity bleed) for a few minutes. If there is someone there to help you can have them hammer the pedal to the floor and hold it while you tighten them all back up. If not, just tighten them up.  Then proceed with bleeding the brakes, starting with the furthest from the master cylinder and working to the closest. I also recomend heading over to Harbor Freight and puchasing their "One Man Bleeder" thing.
