Alright - I'm ticked off that once again my tank was overfilled by the pump attendant.

I know that some of you have refused to allow them to pump your gas for you - however according to ORS 480 there is nothing that exempts owners of  "classics" from being able to pump their own gas.  What options do we have as owners of collector cars to legally prevent fuel attendants from damaging our vehicles when they spill gas or overfill the tank?  Can we file a claim against the owner of the gas station for the cleanup and repair of gas damaged paint?

Totally with you, I always tell them I would like to do it, if you don't mind. They usually agree. But on the other hand I do not like to fill the tank all the way anyways, because they is the chance of overfill and slosh while driving and that's not pretty if your gas cap doesn't seal or go back on correctly. I try to estimate how much gas I can get by using the dollar 5,10,15, method to get me around 3/4 full. Gas does expand when it gets hot outside. A full tank on a hot day can create its own problems, expanding gas must go somewhere, usually weeps into the carbs under pressure. You got a nice ride, you should not take the chance of a minimum wage gas attendant putting gas in your car, they don't care about you or your car. Go somewhere else. Protect your ride. Filing a claim will go nowhere, it's a service that they provide and you chose to go there.

It may be time for each of us to appeal to our state legislators to modify the law to allow the same exemptions for classics as the motorcycles do.  Anyone interested in emailing their legislators?  Perhaps we can write up some proposed verbage?

We've ALWAYS pumped our own gas in our bug, no one has ever questioned it, the attendant has to take it off the pump, then we can insert it and hold it in the tank, until ready to be removed.

That is exactly my point though.  It sounds like a common occurrence to use the same exception that the motorcyclists use.  However it is against the law to do this.

If most of us are "breaking the law" by pumping our own gas in our "classics" - should the law be modified to allow a motorcycle style exemption?

With my car and its side gas fill I always hold the nozzle.
If I don't when the pump clicks off there is a chance that it will jerk the nozzle out of the car.
Then it bounces off the fender and gets gas everywhere.

So's I just hold it and let them do the rest.
They usually get the point that I do car even though my car doesn't look its best.

With the black car I have had no issue when filling it up.
They plug it in and let it go till it stops.
Again I stand there watching over the process and I also remove and install the cap as I have no trust in them.
Even though I mostly fill up at the Costco in Wilsonville where they all remember me and the car.

The worst performance mod is whatever you're limited to because you convinced yourself (or others) that anything bigger or faster was too extreme for a street car.

i always fill my own gas on my jeep and when i had the bugs, of course with the bike as well. with the jeep i have simply stated that i would like to fill it or will hold the gas station accountable for any damages that occur while filling up. if they still refuse i just go to another gas station :2up:

I usually just grab the pump and have at it. Never have gotten any grief for it. The law I believe is holding the gas stations liable for not pumping gas for you. There is no liability on the part of the consumer.

By the way a quick fix is to move to Washington then you can do it yourself all the time...

I was told years ago by an attendant that you can be fined $2,000 for taking the nozzle off the pump.   However, once the attendant initially takes it off, you can pump it yourself, and return the nozzle.  Again this was years ago and that info may not have even been accurate at the time, and things may have changed.  I personally have not read the law regarding this yet, so have no clue on specifics now.  I agree, and think classics  should have similar rules as motorcycles.  Surprising they don't already.

Personally I take a big gas can to be filled, and do it myself at home when possible.  Removes them from the equation all together.    :flamethrower:  Or get out and babysit the attendant if no other options are available.    :rotflmao:  Would rather pump my own gas like other states allow.  Get in, get out, no mess, scratches, or damage.  Nobody cares about your own ride like you do.

totally wrong Mark. you can get up to a $500 fine for pumping your own. in oregon the only fuel you can self serve is motorcycles and aviation. there are no exceptions and both you and the the station can be fined. now in reality i've never known a single person that has been fined but don't count on the good disposition of police and state employees.

28 years of doing it kinda proves nobody cares...Quit worrying about it and just pump your own damn gas. Case closed.

since the first day I brought home my 67 I  have had to show the attendants where the tank is at.  :)  ( LOVE the baffled look from those who do not know) the first 2 fills neither person could get the gas cap on right or shut the hood properly. So I always open the hood, remove the cap, stand and watch. I tell them where I want it. and then I put the cap back on and shut the hood. So far the nozzle always clicks off. But I am ready to grab it if it doesn't.

What really ticks me off more than anything is that these attendants can ever seem to get my gas cap on....i mean...they  dont even check to see if its on right.  I get not  being  familiar with the car...or caring about it because its not yours.  But  what happened to taking pride in your work and at least trying to do a good job.  How hard is it  to get a gas cap on right?

I check everytime.  Im sick and tired of gas  sloshing down my fender.  But its better than in the trunk I guess.
