For most of us - taking a road trip in a classic VW is something you do during the "nice" times of the year. You probably check the oil, adjust the valves, replace the fuel filter. Fill'er up and go!
What if it was during the dead of winter? You might throw in some tire chains, replace the wipers, and toss a couple blankets in the back.
Now how about if the trip covered 450 miles of back roads, forest service roads, logging trails that consisted of primarily gravel, mud or snow? And while you're at it - throw in a river crossing or two. Well in that case you might actually take a real good look at the mechanical condition of your vehicle and make sure it was ready. You might load up with spare parts, gas, tires. Survival gear in the event you got stuck. Basically you'd prepare as if your life depended on it - because in this case preparation does make the difference between getting the the destination or waiting for the spring thaw to have AAA pull you out.
This week I travel south to Grants Pass to join an old friend on a unique road trip. We'll join about 38 other early Type 2 (pre-68 Buses, Single/Double Cabs) on the 12th annual Shasta Snow Trip. Most of these guys have spent the past month or more preparing for this trip.... other have just started. The bottom line is that early Thursday morning three dozen or more buses will convene a hair north of Clear Lake in California. They will had out in groups with the goal of making it to Mt Shasta City by Friday night.
Wish us luck.....
