I am sorry to report that I am no longer a Bug Owner. My 1970 standard beetle caught fire just past sylvan on 26 last Tuesday morning. fire trucks were not sure where I was, and by the time they caught up to me, there was nothing left to save. I pulled out what I could, but it was never enough. lost many good things with it, and now it's in VW heaven. (scrapper gave me a pittance for it's carcass)

being a bug owner was fun while it lasted. Perhaps I will one day have another one.

Gregory

Bummer Gregory.  Another VW will take its place eventually.  Question though....  Was this your car fire on TV?  http://www.kgw.com/video/featured-videos/Big-flames-from-car-fire-at-26-and-217-136274433.html

Do you know what may have caused it by chance?

Keep an eye out and you will find a good deal on another bug I'm sure.

I'm with JbJetta too.... where did the fire start?  From the video it looks like the engine caught fire first.

Where was your fuel filter?  Did you have one of those plastic filters spliced between the fuel pump and the carburetor?

I feel your pain my 68 burned several months ago in Beaverton too.
I was parked in front of a friends house and did not know it caught fire untill we heard the Fire trucks outside.
I plan on sving mine though as I allready had most of the new interior parts in boxes at home.
I am still looking for some tail light wiring though!!!!!!

I had a scare several years ago when I was driving my 1958 bug... Had the wife and dogs on board, was heading for the beach.  Anyways, Char said the car was smelling like gas, and someone flagged me down... I was leaving a trail of gas behind me!  The output line from the fuel pump had come out. No, no the hose, the actual metal tube.  I have no idea why it did not go up in flames, coulda killed us all.

Sorry for you loss! There are many good VW's out there that need homes!
Who knew that a cheap little car designed for the masses at the whim of an evil dictator could be so very cool more than 6 decades later?

  • Time to make the doughnuts....
This is a good time to put on my official TheSamba member hat and state:

"You should always move the fuel filter from the engine compartment to under the car by the transmission."

The weight of the filter with even a small amount of gas in it wiggling around over the years will loosen and work the fuel fitting out of the carb.  This will leave the fuel pump pumping with the engine and that gas will then hit the still firing distributor and...well...we all know the outcome.

Sorry to see your car have to go this way.  Perhaps it had a Tibetan monk for a soul.......
The worst performance mod is whatever you're limited to because you convinced yourself (or others) that anything bigger or faster was too extreme for a street car.
