logan has an air cooled emergancy...lets just say his new toy that runs a 1600cc air cooled is kaput ( broken for our non german friends). we need to pull the engine and replace a ?fly seal? atleast we think thats it. MARK...need your help on figuring this one out! todd said it sounded like what happened to you with the engine puking oil...and starting to loose power..then after a while its good....the work day...will be this sunday ASAP..probably around 8 am cuz logan has to be at work by 6.45. he has limited tools so bring what you think we will need, and my house is only 1 min away so we are covered there.  PLEASE HELP A COOL CAR LIVE AGAIN...IT DIED ON THE TRIP TO ITS NEW HOME

LETS HEAR FROM YA!

The worst performance mod is whatever you're limited to because you convinced yourself (or others) that anything bigger or faster was too extreme for a street car.

you could also stick this down in the shop days spot and it wont be lost when people are trying to find it.

OK, can you clarrify what happened to the car?  I doubt a main seal would be the problem...  I have had squarebacks, but Sunday AM is church time...  May be able to help in the afternoon.
Who knew that a cheap little car designed for the masses at the whim of an evil dictator could be so very cool more than 6 decades later?

I was drving in 4th coming home from picking up the car in portland on US26 right by the zoo when all of the sudden i felt her loose a little power , so i down shifted into 3rd and it got going a little then started blowing smoked all out the back. i pulled over and got out to check her out when i noticed that there was fluid on the tail end that turned out to be oil. Now when she's warm and running she just has a constant drip/stream of oil coming out from under the engine between the heat exchanger thing ( sorry im a watercooled guy lol) and the engine block ( i think.....). She wont leak alot until she is really warmed up though. I drove her around the block this morning and only had one drip of oil when i was done.  All i know is i'm super bummed out , i try to be unbias and pick up a sweet aircooled and look what happens lol. By the way, teh engine is a 1600 converted over to dual carbs if that helps at all.

OK, sounds like it might be a blown head if it is leaking from the side by the heater box.  If it is a 1600, then don't drive up 26 in 4th!  The square is about 1000 pds heavier than a bug, so the 1600 is working a LOT harder.  Oh, and dual carbs are standard on late model type 3's.  Hmm, which side of the engine was the oil coming out of?  Driver side is most likely as that side runs hotter.  Also, is the rubber bellows in place between the fan shroud and the back of the car?  We probably will want to pull the engine and check the head nuts on both sides...

By the way, if ya are going to be driving air cooled, I recomend  getting AAA.  One tow is all it takes to make it worthwile (trust me, experience talking here....)

Ok so I saw it lastnight (Was part of the rescue party) and I can tell you I do not think it is his head, he is leaking from the wrong place, and although I did not have a flashlight to really get up in there and take a look, I have worked on enough Air cooled cars to be pretty sure it is not that. I belive it to be an Oil pressure switch/quage, or the seal between the engine and the oil cooler. Now I have never worked on a square back but have worked on quite a few Bugs and Vans, that have had blown heads and I never seen one leak like this when that happened. Plus the guy he bought it from said it ran fine just hours before(Yes he could be lying, but we have to assume that he is telling the truth.) and it has been my experience that if the head is going to blow it usally gives you some type of pre blow warning rather than just bam. Once again no air cooled expert here, but just a guess.

There is no oil coming from either side (I.E. heads or valves), and when I wiped my finger across the incredibly hot push rods it came up VW Clean (A bit of oil). All of the oil is spewing from Directly center in the gap between what I would assume is the oil cooler (Shroud at the very rear) and the engine itself. This is what would lead me to assume it was either the seal/gasket whatever between the two, or the oil pressure switch/guage.
No really...I do it for a living.

The type 3 oil cooler lies flat under the tin on top of the motor, kinda to the left side, and the oil pressure sender is threaded into the top of the cooler.  Could be a bad seal there... I was thinking head since he said it was comming down by the heater box...  Probably the valve cover gaskets may be leaking, and who knows when it last had a valve adjustment, which could partially account for the loss of power when it warms up.

Todd, my car is still doing the oil light thing, I guess I better call and make an appt. with your boss...

update...might not need a shop day.... logan drove the car all day with no problem. just a little drip here or there. took it over to marks and reset the timing, points and flow tested the carbs. it was only idling on one carb so he fixed that and now it seems that the only problem is its idling a little on the high side, just a small tweek... we think it might have been just the fact that a driver use to a corrado vr6 jumped in a air cooled car and went...perhaps a little to hard on it.... but all is fine and i dont think there will be an offical shop day this sunday but i will let logan have the final word on that....

Likewise, and yes... we need to push jeff into something lol. Anyway the car has been fine driving around city and has only been leaking a small drop of oil from time to time if any. So i have no idea   . I took her over to Marks yesterday and he made it run way happier, the timing was all wacked out and she was only idling off one carb :?. Thanks a bunch for everything mark!!!!  I'm still kind of scared to take it up to speeds above 50 for long periods but i'm sure as long as i drive her like a aircooled not a vr6 it will be ok    . Within the next day or so i will be putting in new plugs and wires along with an oil change ( i have no idea how long it's been) so she'll be running even better shortly.
