  • What?

I've had quite a hard time with acvw's so far. I've spent probably close to $1500 so far on my bug and I have NOTHING to show for it.

I wouldn't say you have NOTHING to show for it. You have made some upgrades that are worthwhile.  It is a 45 year old car. Takes some time and love to keep it going. Or buy one that someone has put all the love into.

I'm not giving up on it. I just need to make it less of a priority right now. It would be cheaper to get the Jetta going. So I should fix it first so I can take my time on my bug and do it right  :2up:

Ok. I have finally decided that I will do away with the Jetta. I have come to the realization that I need to get a Vw Caddy again, or even a Vw Bus or Vanagon for camping and hauling stuff. Only reason I need to get rid of it is to make room for another car. Or else I would love to keep it  :2down:

This is a GLI model Jetta which was only made in '84 for the Mk1's. So it came factory with the GTI motor and trans. It does have a clean title. I just got it through DEQ in December. Tags are good until 3/13.

I've put about $1000 into the Jetta since I picked it up 2 years ago. It is now on the road and a good running car. Since I've had it I have replaced:

new fuse block
water pump
thermo fan switch
o2 sensor
valve cover gasket
motor mounts
clutch cable (clutch disc is Sachs and is fairly new from PO)
all front end bushings with poly bushings
inner and outer tie rods
ball joints
repacked and replaced cv joints
engine bay shift bushings (could use the one at the bottom of the shifter replaced)
replaced front wheel bearings and repacked the rears (I have some new ones for the rear that will go with the car but it didn't need them)
windshield and seal

I will also include the front and rear brake pads that I bought for it but have not installed yet. Also will include a new master cylinder. Also included is another close ratio transmission. It locked up after sitting for a short time. I think the shift fork is loose or not set right. But it is a good core none the less.

The car does have some persistent electrical problems. Mainly stuff like going around and cleaning up contacts and such from sitting for a couple of years not being driven until I got it. Something in the front is still leaking when it rains and the driver side floor board gets a little wet. That has contributed to some of the electrical glitches. But a new fuse block ($117) fixed most of them. I think the water may be coming in around the heater fan. And speaking of heater fan. It does not currently work. There is no power draw on the system when operating the switch. Either is a bad connect or switch. I just got in from some testing and it appears to be in the switch as I get power to the switch, but nothing coming back out.

It also has some dings and dents. It has some surface rust and a few small cancer spots around the from windshield from the old bad window seal that was leaking that has since been replace. And there is another cancer spot on the trunk lid and the support for the truck latch. Nothing that cannot be fixed. Also, there does tend to have water leak in to the trunk. I think one of the previous owners backed into something and slightly buckled the trunk lid maybe? I have not really looked into the cause yet.

Other then it seems to idle a little high, it runs great going down the road. I love how peppy and how good the transmission shifts. This transmission sounds to have some miles on it. But I think it will be good for awhile yet. I took it down to southern Oregon and back with no problems. Was a fantastic drive.

The interior is in ok shape. Smells a little moldy from sitting for so long with moisture in the car. Front driver seat is torn, the rear head rest seems are coming undone.

The sunroof does NOT leak!

Asking $1000 OBO. I would take less from a club member.

Also would be interested in trade for a good running 1600 DP or larger motor with dual carbs.

I'm also opened to trading for a Vw Caddy, Vw Bus, or Vanagon. Depending on what you have and how nice it is I can throw some money on top of the deal.

Currently as it sits

Forgot to add that is has mk2 lowering H&R lowering springs in the front. I have the rears as well but they are not installed.

I have an offer for a trade on the table though.

Well. The Jetta is gone. At least it has gone to another member who I know will bring it back further from the brink then what I have. And I'll get to see it around and help them turn wrenches on it!
