I decided to dump my 009 distributer due to the FSFH (Flat Spot From Hell), I looked around for a shop to get me a vacuum advance disty that would work with my H30/31 and give it a thurough massage at the same time and landed at Chuck's
All I can say is WOW, the car has never run so good....  :driving:

Thanks Chuck!

Can you really have the name wagonmaster, and need to take your car to Chuck?

Well "need to" is pretty strong language. More like "I need someone who knows what they're doing to get me distributor so I can ditch this freaking 009 and it's rediculous flat spot " then I though WTF why not let a pro tune it. I'm glad I did it was worth it.

Its good that it worked out for you.
The worst performance mod is whatever you're limited to because you convinced yourself (or others) that anything bigger or faster was too extreme for a street car.

My first thought was "Chuckwagenmaster" - I seem to recall a commercial with miniature horses pulling a small chuckwagen full of dog food.... or something like that.  :dontknow:

  • I figured since it wasn't being used I'd try it on

Huh, as a an aircooled Volkswagen Tech. I can tell you that most flat spots are caused by the carb. specifically the wrong carb for the engine/dizzy combo. But Chuck does good work anyway, and it sounds like he did you right.
No really...I do it for a living.

I'm not sure it matters which carb set up you run, as the 009 is sh!7 on any set up.

That hasn't been my experience but user mileage may vary  :cheers2:

I guess it could have been the carb, but the more I drove the car, the more it just felt like it was begging for a little advance as I pulled away. With the RPMs up it would pull real good but right off of idle it was drivng me nuts........ Now it like a whole new car

Deleted my post be mistake.  Thx Todd for the save quote.  I have not really seen the flat spot when only using a single carb.  The OG stuff is much better than the new crap that's for sure..

I run the 010. Its my fav with the curve.  The 019 is loved just as much if not more.

Find one of those and your set

My new motor runs a Gene Berg Stinger so none of these apply to me  :2up: typically (once again this is my experience yours may vary) with a little carb lovin you can get rid of the flat spot. Of course there are different means to an end so whatever works. I personally use 009 with pertronix and the EMPI made baby webbers and it works great zero problems plenty of juice.

My setup was a 1600SP, H30/31 and 009 with pertronix. All I know for sure is that it was pretty sucky pulling away from a stop!

I hate to say it Todd but I am surprised as hell that your stuff runs as well as you say with those typical items. Cause that is just a bunch of typical garbage in IMO. "of course this is and arguable post at this point now "  009 typically suck, and EMIP carbs, well do i really need to explain how horrible EMPI is.  Most all the feed back on there carbs/most everything  is horrible. see link below for your own judgment on EMPI

Not sure many here would even argue this point.  :dontknow:

Might i ask why you are running Gene Berg Stinger stuff now if your last application was so great? I mean I know why one uses Gene Berg. Just trying to make a point Big guy.  :cheers2:

Completely valid question J, I hate EMPI absolutly but when I got my carb set up unless you could find an original set of Babys it was your only choice. The Single empi carbs are in fact junk. The last 4 times I have installed one on a car at the shop they have been bad out of the box, we do not use them if you came to our shop we would rather sell you a rebuilt carb(rebuilt by us) than a new Empi. When I got my "Baby" setup(as well as Thanney, and I belive Glenn as well. They were still marketing them under the Brosal/Empi name and they did not have nearly the amount of problems. However before I install any carb on my car I go thru it from top to bottom and make sure it all looks good. This is as far as I know the only EMPI stuff I have on my car and if I were building it today rather than 2 years ago I would use real Webbers(Sidenote: real Webbers are now also built in China so they may not have the same quality as they once did we will see). Another thing of importance to note. It has only been in the last year or so that 009 dizzys have started to suck, not picking on China here, but as they became harder to find they started outsourcing them to china and guess what? the quality suffered greatly. The reason I am running Gene Berg Stinger ignition on my new motor is becasue you can not get the system anymore and it is just Old School Hottness, I would imagine that MSD is every bit as good, but everyone has that,  name one other car besides mine that has the stinger :2up: IMHO I believe the reason EMPIs quality sucks so bad is that they make EVERYTHING you can think of for a VW. And in order to do that they outsource to a lot of little company's that could give a flying F about quality and just want the cash. Or the stuff is made in China with very little QC and people buy it anyway (primarily because it's cheap) so they continue to make it. Want the Quality to get better? Just quite buying there stuff and see what happens.
