GI Joe's carried a similar product for a while and I wanted to give it a shot but didn't have anything to paint.  This looks good and I actually like their aresol spray paint.

I used that paint on my Dwarf Car about a year ago and amazingly enough it was pretty damn good, and lasted well. It is still running on that car in fact, so I would give it a big thumbs up.

A couple things

1) It REALLY stinks, so MAKE SURE YOU GET A RESPERATOR!!

2) IT WILL orange peel and YOU WILL have to color sand, so plan on it.

3) You will need an HVLP gun to shoot it. Dosn't have to be the top of the line, but does have to be HVLP. Almost any decent compressor will run it, once again it dosn't have to be top of the line.

4) DON'T try to do it in one coat, 3 or 4 light coats will get you a much better result.

5) Unless you are a Sadist don't use black.

If you have a place that you are going to do it, I would be glad to help you. I am not a professional painter but I do have a dwarf car under my belt so I guess I have some experiance. Also if you have a place I would love to do my car as well, so maybe after we shoot yours we could shoot mine? (Just a thought). Anyway....That's what I got. :-)

Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat.

Then if you mess up

Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat, Color sand, buff, re-coat.

Plus you will never get the shine you are looking for unless you really and I mean REALLY! know how to use a buffer at a proffesional level. Black is the color that will drive you nuts. If you hover with the buffer for more than a few seconds YOU WILL burn through. THink I'm BSing? Check out the top of my GTi sometime where the guy who owned it before me took a buffer to it and hoverd for about 3 seconds. Then you will know why I would also like to re shoot mine.

from the video it seems it can be done in a day.. is this true? and how long after you paint do you do the color/wet sand?

I'm no pro, mind you, but it can be done in one day.  I will preface it with: as long as all the bodywork is "good enough".  You don't need to color sand if the paint lays out nicely.  I have never sprayed this stuff but much of the final product does rely on the quality of the paint and the consistancy of the paint mix.  I have used a good gun that layed paint down with orange peel that matched current new car standards and opted not to do any sanding (it wasn't black).  I am not smart enough to comment on how long it takes to dry, but do know that much of it is affected by the type of reducer (fast or slow evaporating characteristics) and the current atomospheric conditions (hot or cold).  My understanding is that as long as the previous paint has not cured (dried for like 24 hours) then you can put the next coat on without sanding or scuffing.

What I will say, and stick to, is that you will spend far more time doing panel prep than you will spend painting the dog-gone car.

azila,
You didn't say how much time you have to do this. If you can give
it 10 days or so ( after prep ), you may want to look at the possibilty
of rolling either Rustoleum or Brightsides ( boat paint ). Both have worked
well for quite a few folks. If you do a search for " moparts paint job on
a budget", there is a huge string on it.

I've done my 69 bug with rustoleum ( rolled ), and it does work.

The car has been compounded but not polished, so there's more shine
to be had.

It's a lot less mess and hazard than regular car paint. I'm sure it's not
as durable either, but far better than a rattle can.

Both of the above posts have merit Mark saying that it "can" be done in a day with the proper prep is absolutly true. If you paint it and let it sit for a couple hours you can then color sand "IF need be" Mark was also correct that if you use a high quality HVLP gun your orange peel will be at a minimum, but unless you are willing to shell out a couple hundy for the gun I would say be prepared to sand. As for rolling it? I have seen both good and bad roll jobs. If you get it right, like the bug in the pic it looks good. If you get it wrong you will be sorry you ever even thought about it.

Eitherway there are challenges. I personally plan to spray as I have a little experience with the process and the paint. As I said I used that exact same paint on a Dwarf car which is still running that same paint 2 years later after running in the dirt and mud of a track. Point is if you take your time and do a fairly decent job it may last several or more years. Where as other paints "may not" Plus remember that rustolium will react to car wax and sealer shortening the life span of the paint. (That comes directly from a friend of mine that does auto body work not from personal experiance).

Anyway from what I can tell both methods have merit, so I guess you have choices to make now. :-)

GI Joe's has it for sure. FOr a bug you probaly only need a half gallon or less. But better to have to much than not enough.

We going to make this a Shop day?
