Also while I'm at it here is the GTI 16v badged grill that I picked up last week. This was after I bought it and installed it in a Fred Meyer's parking lot haha. I couldn't even wait until I got home. Car is kind of dirty in pic though.

Re: JbJetta's Motor Swap Re: Cruise for the Cure 2010
Hey Bryan. After bsing with you last night about the 5th gear in my tranny. I asked my buddy that built the transmission about what he had done to it. He said it has the 3.67 ring and pinion with an 0.71 5th gear from a FFZ transmission if that gives you any idea what he is talking about... I don't haha. I know it has the bolt kit for the differential in it as well.
Also on swapping rear windows. Does yours have the holes for the spoiler above the back window? I got to looking at mine today and it has two hole through the glass that the spoiler bolts to. And is next weekend a good time to come pick up that core support? I'm almost itching to get my single rounds on :P

Re: JbJetta's Motor Swap Re: Cruise for the Cure 2010
ok where to start... ;D
Sounds like the guy that built your tranny knew what he was doing. the bolt kit for the R/P is a total must upgrade, as it is the primary failure point. bonus!
Here is the tranny code and gear ratios for all mk1/mk2 trannys, so I am not sure what the FFZ is. and as far as the .71...that is WAY too low to be practical. the .75 is the ideal gear, out of a diesel, which would make a difference of about 300-400 rpm higher that what you have. oh and 3.67 final is normal. you should take a look at what tranny code you have, and check out the ratios on this chart. its on the bottom of the tranny, on a flat spot right by the oil pan (if you didn't know).
as far as the back glass, yes it is a GTI so it does have the holes in the glass for the wing, so you are good there. Lemme know if you are interested in a trade.
I got the core support lyin here, and this weekend would be alright, as long as it is on Sunday. My brother-in-laws b-day partay is saturday afternoon and the Vortex Date night cruise is that evening. also, the shop day is this saturday, but do my bro's party, i will be unable to attend that. So I am totally not busy Sunday, or at least I say that now ::). also, I work in Aurora, if that is any closer to you, and I can bring it to work. Or if you wanna come out here we can swap rear glass too. your call. later, dude
Oh yea I had fun yesterday...thanks for joining us.

Re: JbJetta's Motor Swap Re: Cruise for the Cure 2010
It was fun. I love all the suggestions with what is wrong with my car haha. I don't mind constructive criticism. I think I will keep my side moldings though. I don't want to make my mk2 look like EVERYONE else's mk2. I dare to be different. I don't mind the headlights... But I do like the single rounds more. The Rally's would be best... some day. But I still get lots of compliments now for how clean and/or how stock it is. Nothing wrong with that.
I will hopefully make it over to the tune up day Saturday. But Sunday sounds good. Good thing you or I didn't win the tune up thingy. $100 minimum just for the cheap plug wires. I won't put anything but Bosch plugs, cap, and rotor in my car. A good easy $50 more I'm sure. And I am running full synthetic oil now. I was using the Delo 400 15-40w diesel oil. I've been running that with good results for the past few years. My friend has been running it in his GTI for 200k miles with out needing to pull the head or oil pan yet. And he drives his car harder then I do. Thing still screams! Not to stir up the oil pot again :'( But I don't think the tune up included an oil change anyways. So ours I'm sure would have ran close to $150 if not more haha. Unless there was a set limit on funds towards it.
He does know what he is doing when it comes to working on WC's. He does it as a hobby and has a clientel of people. He maintains and rebuilds engines and transmissions. He also offers a 12k mile warranty on all his work as well. He does so well on transmissions... That German Transaxle said they would warranty any work done to a transmission if my buddy had to get into it for any reason. He was proud to hear that. He kind of travels to do it now as he does not have a good shop of his own to work out of. So he will go work in someone's driveway if he needs to. But it is his only means of making money right now as well. Only thing is he lives down south in the Roseburg area. We did the work to my car down in Harrisburg. His dad has a shop we use to work on our cars sometimes. If you need some transmission work if you don't want to tackle it yourself just let me know. I can see what he can do for you price wise. He is usually open for trades too. He is getting into more mk3 stuff for himself now though.
I would love to come out again next Saturday but I am pretty much broke. I only went because the Misses insisted and wanted to buy ME dinner for a change. Plus she likes your wife. Which is unusual because she usually does not like to hang out with anyone I know haha. I start my new job tomorrow. After my first check I should start to be able to come more often. If I have the gas, or if I can off those mesh wheels or some other stuff around here I may show up and freeze my butt off in the parking lot again this Saturday. I think I will clean out the engine bay next time to show off the 16v. I am was glad there was a few people more interested in the 16vs then the VRs.
If I was to go beyond naturally aspirated. Should I go the route of a turbo or supercharger? Which one offers the most bang for the buck?

Re: JbJetta's Motor Swap Re: Cruise for the Cure 2010
there, I fixed the link for the gear ratios image
I like turbos myself...it's free HP. Superchargers take-to-make. Turbo's are powered by the exhaust, a naturally occuring by-product of internal combustion, and a turbo just utilizes this exhaust to produce pressure that the engine can use to produce more power. the more exhaust pressure, the more boost=more HP!!
a supercharger is nice because you are not relying on the engine to get a Turbine up to speed, rather it is belt driven and the turbine rpm is directly controlled by the engine rpm, thus eliminating the spool-up "lag". however, you have a 10-40% effeciency loss because the engine has to physically turn the turbine. and as the charger produces more pressure, it thus produces more drag/resistance on the engine, so your efficiency goes down as the pressure goes up.
so there are give and take to bot systems. usually the deciding factor is.....$$$$$$$$$....i.e. how many dead presidents you have in your wallet.. ;D
thats awesome about your buddy. i will keep that in mind fo sho.
That and keep the mouldings...stick it to "the man" !!! 8)

Re: JbJetta's Motor Swap Re: Cruise for the Cure 2010
I believe from doing a little digging (googling), the ff and ffz are a close ratio transmissions. I have the AGB code in mine if I remember right. If not it is the 2y. It is one or the other but I'm sure it is the AGB code.
Wow. So my 5th gear is even taller then the diesels haha. wow. No wonder the "Fast killer" assassinates my Fast when I shift into 5th haha.

Re: JbJetta's Motor Swap Re: Cruise for the Cure 2010
OMG I'm so friggin pissed! I just bought a new distributor for my car not even 2 months ago. I was doing a general inspection under the hood 10 mins ago while waiting for class when I spotted oil around the distributor. I just spent like $170 on that POS. And it is leaking oil already? It was not the Bosch. Some other brand that DIP carries. I need to find the reciept or I will be furious. If I can't find it they won't exchange it and they will lose my business.
So much for "proven Japanese performance" And so much for Japanese engineering in German engineering getting alone. Also, my bosch rotor would not fit on this distributor. I think those rice burners are out to get me.
On a side note. Anyone have a good used Bosch distributor for a 16v I could buy? I might need it as a spare or if I can't get this one exchanged. I got this one because my Bosch one was leaking oil and I dismantled it beyond repair and gave away the pieces.
Ugh

I figured since it wasn't being used I'd try it on

The ONLY Japanese part you should be using on your German car is a water pump EVERYTHING else should be German. But what do I know right/ ;)

Oh I believe you. I am even more of a firm believer in you now. It was all DIP had in stock and I needed a distributor that day. They have to order reman Bosch's for $225. I cannot put in a distributor myself yet. I don't have a timing light and I'm afraid to do it by hand since it IS a 16v valve and I don't want the timing off.

Re: JbJetta's Motor Swap Re: Cruise for the Cure 2010
^^^Check the O-Ring for sure^^^ But most likely just a bad fit. I have had this problem at the shop a few times. However when you are putting the new one in make sure and give that O-Ring a little vaseline or oil first.
Bryan if your asking if the WP can be rebuilt there is really nothing to rebuild. You pull it out, pull all of the 10s out if it, put the new one in(blue lock tight the threads) and re-install. All that comes out is the front plate which holds the Impellers, and I don't think you could rebuild them(maybe but by the time you were done I bet it would cost you more than just buying a new JAPANESE one.
