Hey I may make it now that I have my GTI up and running again.

And I want a rematch! The car took a dump back in November. The headgasket went out on it late one night in the middle of no where. How ever.... I stuffed in a rebuilt 2.0l 16v and tranny this weekend  ;D I don't think Duane will be me this time... at least I hope not  :-X It is scarily fast now  :o

<------totally jealous!!!  :P I was wondering what happened to you and your car.  You kinda dropped off the face of site for a while. So was the miss at the track and the head gasket related?

I totally wanna get together and check out your 2.slow  ;) setup. I've been wanting to do the same to mine!  You gonna be at the next meeting?

No the miss what just it needing a good tune up that I couldn't afford before the race. I dropped $250 in tune up parts and it ran really well that day! But died at 1:30am the next morning traveling down I-5. I seen something flash twice in my dash. I looked down to look what it was when I noticed the temp gauge was tached out. I pulled over and turned on the defrost on high and waited but it would not cool down so I had to shut her down. When I did, a mushroom cloud of white smoke came from the hood. I thought it might have been on fire for a moment until I popped the hood. It was toast. Sprung a leak in a hose I was eyeballing the day before thinking to myself "wow I should replace that soon". Next time "soon" = that very moment.

I got back into school and have not had a running VW lately so I have not made it to any meetings lately. But I will make it to the next meeting. And then start showing at every other meeting as I have evening classes.

I totally wanna get together and check out your 2.slow

I did a po' mans swap on my 2.slow. I just swapped in the head and block into my car. Everything else is what came factory. I just up'd the fuel and air ratio to compensate for the larger bore and longer stroke. Runs like a champ!

I got lucky on the head, block, and tranny. The engine was rebuilt about 5 years ago and was put into my friends scirocco. But he could never finish getting all the parts to put into his 8v scirroco. So he decided to give it to me and a transmission he just rebuilt as bday gifts earlier this month. We pulled the head and lapped the valves for good measure since it had been sitting so long. It was surprisingly cleaner then we thought. It looked like it had just been rebuilt still. Has all kinds of goodies inside from the german rings to an oil filter adapter that moves the oil filter from the normal postion on the oil cooler on the block to where it is hanging now off the end of the transmission. Made it MUCH nicer to change the oil and adds that much more oil capacity.

Alright - split the topic out from the CFTC thread.

So.... I probably wouldn't beat you now with how my motor was running then.  HOWEVER.... my motor was running like crap that night and the clutch was just about fried.

My motor is in pieces in the garage.  I will have it back together probably by the end of March.  Most likely it will still be the 1835cc it was last year.  It may get a mild cam and some new lifters.  It will have a crank triggered ignition system - EDIS with Megajolt.  (I have the EDIS parts in my garage).  Both of us will be driving very different motors by the time the new race season comes around.....

That being said - let the 2010 Volkster Race Season trash talking begin....  :)

Sorry...OOOOOOO...SOMPIN SHINY!!!!!

anyways, now that we are where we r supposed to be...sounds pretty cool man. It'll be looking forward to seeing it next week!

As for racing, I wont be doing nothing until I get that tranny swapped on the gti. While I am at it I'm gonna rebuild the axles and replace the flattened oil pan (pleading the 5th ;) )  I may be hinting at a shop day!?!?  More of that later and elsewhere :)

Oh it is on! Don't worry though, I won't leave a water or smoke trail this time for you to follow me to the finish line :P I'll bring a tow strap so you can keep up!

I say it runs like a champ but it is still a little off. Might be due to the duct taped rubber boot on the air cleaner box from a tear underneath that may have been the issues with the bucking with the old engine. ( I loves me some duct tape!) Eventually I'd like to get my hands on a 50mm intake to slap in this bad boy. It is still the CE1 wiring and CIS-E injection and engine management. I'd like to find a donor car to swap in some CE2 wiring so I can run the CIS-Motronix injection and engine management so I can put in a chip and cams. I was told I only needed the intake cam though. Then this thing will be perfect! (beside exhaust) Unless I decided to add a turbo but I don't have the money for something like that.

Wow... My friend told me the tranny had a tall 5th gear. He was not lieing. At  55mph I'm turning 2300 rpms. At 65 I'm turning almost 2800 rpms. Have not dashed up to 75 to see yet :p. It sounds weird shifting from 4th to 5th. I'm not used to hearing the rpms drop that much. I notice I have a tendancy to speed now as I am used to what the rpms used to sound like at 65 haha.

<-------Turbo!!!!!  that's the direction I'm going (eventually ;) )  yea a lot of people put a diesel 5th gear in the tranny's to lower the Raps.  I have been looking for one myself.  Oh yea, I can get one new real easy, but I'm a cheap basterd....

Well I did even more stuff to it over the weekend. I replaced all the front end bushings with bushings for the Audi TT. I also put in some good used Sachs shocks and struts and some Autotech 1" drop springs to lower it an inch. And I replace the dristributor while I was at it and it pulls a bit harder now as well.

Still need to work on the exhaust rattles and now it needs a front end alignment. Anyone work at a shop that does alignments? I'll bring you some business. Also picked up some BBS mesh wheels I will be attempting to put on tomorrow. Two have light lip damage from a curbing but should be an easy fix.

Also almost lost my right nostril to an unfortunate bungee cord accident. My friend hung a spindle that was loose with a bungee cord while we were pulling the control arms. I was on my knees next the the car and above where the spindle was hanging. The spindle rotated and the bungee cord came undone and in the process of trying to meet the other end over the front fender and into the engine bay... The hook caught my right nostril like it was a pro fisherman. It immediately pulled me up to my feet and into the engine bay. Luckily I went along with it. I unhooked it from my nose and checked it over. No tears any where but I have a scratch on my upper lip as well as a good sized gash in the inside of my right nostril.

WOAH NELLY WE GOTTA FIGHTER HERE!!!!

dang, sounds like you've been bizzay!!

I take my car to Firestone for alignments, just for the sheer fact that i got a lifetime alignment deal.  it's preety spendy, but for as often as i have things apart, or make changes, it has more than paid for itself already.  I replaced the wheel bearing...alignment...I replaced a tie-rod end....alignment......new urethane bushings....alignment!  you get where I'm going here.

It's great! I now have a high flow exhaust with a lot less rattles! How you say? The muffler finally fell off  :o It is a bit louder now I must say and a little ratty sounding. Not bad if you like headaches. I had another muffler to put on but I didn't realize it would not fit my car. Good thing is was free. Now I need to find something that fits :P

Also picked up a pair of headlights, grill, and flawless core support for $30. I just bought it for the GTI 16v badge attached to the grill. The rest were bonuses ;D Wish I had a way of uploading pics from my phone haha.

Ok. Here is some pics of the swap process.

Old 1.8L 16v before I pulled it

Here is the 2.0L 16v almost hooked up

Here is the 2.0L before we pulled the head for an inspection and to lap the valves since it had not been fired since it was rebuilt 4 years ago.

Here is the 2.0L going into the car. In the photo you can see the nifty oil filter system we put in to move the oil filter out to the end of the transmission for ease of access. Normally it sits underneath the oil cooler. Also adds another .5 quarts to the oil capacity which is a good thing.

Here is a photo of the of the oil pump and windage tray after inspecting the bottom end

2.0L block stamp to prove I do have a 2.0L 16v. I didn't get the 9a stamp but it is a 9a block

This is after reinstalling the head after going thru it

And here is what a knock sensor should not look like
