Unless there are overwhelming objections - Saturday October 10th at 6pm is the second Rose City Volksters Drag Race Night.

Please keep in mind that despite the trash talking about slow vs. fast vs. super vs. jet cars - we want to keep this fun.  We do not want anyone to break their cars at the track - leave that to the pros like Mark.  If you can accelerate from a stop and get on the freeway without breaking you will be fine at the track.  There is no need for 6000rpm clutch dumps.

Here are some tips for making it through tech:

1. Battery strapped down (and a back seat).
2. Return springs on carbs (I think you need to have two)
3. Oil - keep it in the engine (wipe down before you go through tech)
4. Windows - you need to roll them up going down the track.
5. Some tracks make you take hubcaps off
6. Taillights/brake lights
7. Wear pants (no shorts) and closed toe shoes.
8. If you plan on running faster than 13.99 you need a helmet.
9. If you’re driving a convertible or ragtop – you need a helmet.

The cost is $25 for a night of racing.  If you haven’t raced at PIR in the past year, there is a $10 track license fee.  If you joined us for the first race night, you are good for the year.  Les Schwab has coupons for $2 off.

I will contact Pete at the track to setup a lane for the club again.

  • Time to make the doughnuts....
that night should work for the "Catbox Express"

and a question about the page you just linked to, if you scroll down there is a club links section.  how do we go about getting ours on that list?
The worst performance mod is whatever you're limited to because you convinced yourself (or others) that anything bigger or faster was too extreme for a street car.

I'd love to bring out my GTI for fun and see what kind of numbers i could pull down. But my distributor has a small oil leak at the seal and i don't have the $180 to replace it yet. I was told I could maybe double up the seal to fix it. But I'm not sure how or what they were talking about. Maybe next year my car will be in better shape to participate. But I'll plan on going to watch anyways.

I will plan on being there, still not sure on what car though.  I am gonna try and get Frankie home this weekend and assess the damage (stored out at my folks).

JBJetta - the oil leak on the distributor shouldn't be an issue as long as it is not dripping.  I had an oil leak around the base of the oil filler on Frankie and they didn't care about that as long as it didn't drip any "measurable amount" in the time you would sit in the staging lanes or the starting lane.  If you wipe it down with a rag, and it starts dripping in less than a minute or two, then maybe you have an issue.  otherwise wipe it off before you go through tech and you'd be fine.  heck if you ran your GTI, it might give me reason to run mine...equal match, eh?

I don't know will they check motor mounts? Mine are pretty much toast. And I don't think mine could match yours til I give mine a proper tune up. If you lightly squeeze the end of my spark plug cable they will shatter haha. Been waiting to get my first paycheck from my new job to give it some lovin'. And I can't start hard to keep my car from buckin'... but when it stops buckin' watch out! Actually I think I need to replace the knock sensor as it seems to ping when not even at full throttle. It doesn't ping going up hills or lugging in 5th. But just barely getting into the secondary and it starts to ping a little and only when it is warmer out. It runs great when it is cold outside. I have already retarded the timing some. If I do it anymore it gets bad hesitation.  So my assumption is the knock sensor cable as it looks pretty tattered.

I only run premium in this baby  ;D I just bought it about a month ago is why it is somewhat in a neglected state. I remember when I bought an '85 Ford Escort wagon that it pinged so bad going up hills and was so gutless. But I just drove the piss out of it and it cleared up and ran really strong in time. But being this is a 16v I do not want to possibly harm it from pushing it hard while pinging. I only paid $185 for the Escort so I didn't mind if I blew it up.... Besides.... It was not a Volkswagen  :P

If it's bucking when you are leaving in first gear it is not your motor mounts(most likely) just fix the hole in your intake system(Probably in the fuel distributor boot) and call it done.
No really...I do it for a living.

what Todd said^^^^.  check that little horseshoe shaped vacuum hose that goes from the idle bypass tube (the one that goes to the Idle stabilizer valve across the intake) to the bottom of the intake runner.  those like to get soft and rub through on the alternator.  Experience talkin...Also you should look into an enrichment kit, from various vendors like TT or DIP or Brenner.  ya know, maybe we can have a quick tune day before the race day...otta get goin on postin in the shop dayz area and maybe i could come over and help you tackle a few things.

But anyways, it would be good to get some water-cooled competition, as I will probably be the only one with a WC there.   :(

That and I would hate to constantly leave all those aircooled's in the dust!!  ;D  ;D  ::)

Let the friendly smack talking begin.... does anyone have an extra mop and bucket they can bring to the track to cleanup after these watercooled cars?

well heck here I was about to come out with some coy comeback for Duane and you totally dunked me.  that ain't fair.  I dont stand a chance!  Heck I'd be just gettin to the finish line and you'd already be back at the pits polishin your wheels.  I know where to pick my fights.  I go fer the little guy that I have a chance with, not the 7ft 400lb linebacker!! :D

so I gotta go ahead with my comeback...took me a while to think of it so I can't waste it (I know, I know, there's ammo for ya!) I may leave a water trail, but at least you'll have a trail to follow.  Heck I'll even leave my taillights on so you can find your way  ;D ;D
