Anybody have one of those nifty VW tow bars that could be borrowed this coming Saturday. Going to look at a 67' Bug in Roseburg and would rather tow than drive back. I would be willing to trade my assistance with any project you need help for trade...well, at least an extra set of hands  ;)

Duane, once again you come to the rescue! I'll stop in the next night or two to pick it up.

Don't forget lights!
Who knew that a cheap little car designed for the masses at the whim of an evil dictator could be so very cool more than 6 decades later?

Never fear! I had a backup plan and as a result, I should be an air-cooled owner once again after tonight...

*details to follow*

(but I will hint that Catbox will no longer be the odd man out)

My Super senses are detecting another one of us Super owners on the way. Could it be? A couple more and we can form them together to become Voltron! (the Vehicle version of course)

Needs a different name something like Shimmy Drip or Super Shimmy. Something that truly describes the Shimmy Beetle experience.

so is that the general issue w/Supers; that they shimmy and shake? does that have something to do with a strut induced suspension?

well lets just say that the stockpile of extra parts that is coming with the car makes up for it being a Super ;D

Yup, the struts on the front are the issue. If they are replaced and all the bushings are new it should not shimmy. Alignment is really important as well.

  • Time to make the doughnuts....
my car to 80 mph has no shimmy.  i only stopped at 80 cause the engine was just a buzzin along.

poly bushings are the cure.

smugs dad's car had new ones installed and i believe the shimmys went away.

the issue is mostly due to the rubber that is in the original stuff is rotted away and spider webs are left behind, ask Rafflebug he knows.

after the bushings i recommend installing the upper strut tie bar.  when i installed mine it was a night and day difference, and that was after the big sway bar, poly stuff, and lowering alot.

Voltron sweet! i had always wondered what the button with the japanese writing on it was for.....
The worst performance mod is whatever you're limited to because you convinced yourself (or others) that anything bigger or faster was too extreme for a street car.
