One the way back from the Hot Import nights (the Volksters Choice Ghia -Jason took first over all!) Lizz started acting up.

When the clutch peddle is pushed in I can feel a vibration. I kept driving a little further and there was no issue with just driving (no noise).
When shifting the vibration was there and it started to make noise. I am thinking I am losing a throw out bearing. I pulled over to keep it from taking out more.

Towed it home once again ( I think she just likes to be towed) and let it sit for the night.

This morning started her up and drove her into the garage... no noise no vibration. I know things don't just fix them selves... So anyone have an suggestions on what it might be? I think throw out bearing needs replacing. this is the motor that came out of Dixie. Did not do any work to the motor just swapped it over.

Have not had a bearing go out before so I am not sure what it really feels like.

  • I figured since it wasn't being used I'd try it on

Without hearing it, the symptoms "sound" like a throw out bearing yes. There is also a chance that it could be the cross shaft, or a smaller chance that it could be the pressure plate as well. If it did not slip at all it is probably not the disk or pressure plate. Did it seem "harder" to push in the C pedal? by harder I mean anything more than normal? Usally when u bend your cross shaft it becomes increasingly harder to engage the C pedal. Anyway bottom line is yes it sounds as if you are loosing your throw out bearing. 30 minutes, 1 battery cable, 3 barrel connectors, 11 tin screws, 2 clamps, 5 wire connections, 4 Bolts, and a throttle cable later and you will have that sucker outta there and laying on the ground. Find out if you have a guided, or unguided (I suspect the unguided) bearing, check your clutch disk while you are there and examine your pressure plate for loose or broken parts. Check your cross shaft to make sure the bearing arms are nice and straight with no broken welds, and clip that new bearing in there making double sure to get your clips in the arm groves and your good. If all else looks good reverse steps 1-8 and SHIP IT!!! :-)
No really...I do it for a living.

It is an unguided one. Did not seem harder to push in just felt the vibration went pushed. Did not notice any slipping. The car was pulling strong and I was able to go up to 55 in third so I think (hope) the disk is fine.

Depending on how the work day goes I will start the removal tonight...

So what is wrong with this picture?

Yup the bearing is not seated in it proper position... The retaining clips are... gone! well I found half of one in the bottom of the bell housing.

Now that I have this motor on the floor... 8) more horse power!

That's right the other infamous flaming motor is ready to go back in, hopefully with the issues all fixed.

Well same issue... once the motor warms up fire out the intake......... :-\

I checked the valve gap each cylinder at top dead center and gab was good so...  motor is out. Not going to mess with the old heads, ordered a set of 044 from CB today. That hurt the old check book.

I also fixed the stinger issue so Thanney if you want the stinger back let me know.

Part #1397 and the manifolds to match the porting. Didn't make sense to me to buy the heads and have a mismatch in the manifolds.

Some day this motor will be in a car and not set it on fire >:(

We did come up with an alternative at the DDB BBQ ;)

So I talked with the sales person at CB and for my application the suggested a different setup. Still based on the 044 cast but with single Hi-Rev springs in place of the dual spring setup. They talked me out of the port and manifold. Apparently the 044 head already flows better then what I had and will work great with my 40's. Any how saves about $400 with this setup :)

I should have my heads by the weekend!

Funny how a busted throwout became a multiple engine swap project.
