So I was puttin around on the web like usual and frequenting Craigslist and The Samba, and I ran across this diamond-in-the-rough in Sandy on CL.  Check it out...

59 Ragtop on CL

The guy doesn't list a price, and based on the pictures it would be a LOOOOONG project to get involved in, but as the ad says, it would be hard to let a rare bird like this rot away. and it IS mostly there.
My question to you RCV folks, what would you think a fair offer would be on this forgotten piece of vintage VW.  Basically if you were looking at this car, what would you pay and what would you think this car is worth (in your opinion).  I have a pretty good idea what they are worth fully restored (I did my homework).

I don't want to call this guy up and insult him with a lowball number until I have a better idea of what I am dealing with.  are these models truely rare, or can they be found commonly and I shouldn't waste my time?  I realize it would be a LOT of work and I think it would be worth it (based on price of course), but the time involved is wasted if it's not worth saving. I would hate to see this car go to the crusher or something like that, though.  maybe if I'm not interested, some else might be interested in rescuing it?  Thanks in advance for your input.

very true.  my only thought was which would be more rewarding to dump money into...a 64 standard or a 59 vert?  i think my wife would love a convertible.  Either way, restoring a car is going to cost a lot of money, especially one in bad shape, like this one AND the one I already have.  I think I would have just as much body work into that 59 as I would the 64.  I know it's apples and oranges, but this car just hit that soft spot in my heart, almost a tear-jerker to think about a car like this rotting away.

I still haven't laid a wrench to the 64 yet so there is no attachment yet, so my options are still open.  but if I did get rid of it en-leu of something else, it would have to be better (potential-wise)

Thanks for the insight!

a poopy as it looks lowball him and then let him counter.

i will not even entertain cars that dont have prices on them even if i really want it as the person listing them usually likes to play games.

if he knows what its worth in "this" condition then he should have it listed at that price.
The worst performance mod is whatever you're limited to because you convinced yourself (or others) that anything bigger or faster was too extreme for a street car.
